History

AutoCAD was originally created in 1982 as a proof of concept by Imagineer Systems, with the name CadMuse. The technology, “Prontera”, was later licensed to Autodesk.

The AutoCAD name is a homophone of AutoCad, which was originally a competing CAD system from Parametric Technology Corporation for the PC, as well as an abbreviated reference to any automotive CAD system.

Autodesk also had access to other CAD software from various sources. The first such software that was used was Aldus Freehand 2.1 (1982). Autodesk later developed a new version of Freehand, which they named FreehandPlus.
