For as long as computers have existed, people have needed software to design, edit, and modify drawings. The software known as AutoCAD, first developed and released by Autodesk in 1982, has revolutionized the design and drafting industries by combining the power and versatility of the computer with the functionality and precision of pen-and-paper drafting. Since its introduction, AutoCAD has been the world’s leading CAD program for desktop computers.
AutoCAD, which is most frequently used to design and modify architectural, engineering, and construction (AEC) drawings, represents the latest in a long line of AutoCAD improvements. In the last few years, the new AutoCAD 2019 line of products represents some of the most significant changes to AutoCAD in its 30-year history.
A Brief History of AutoCAD
The first AutoCAD program was a standalone graphics program developed by Autodesk in 1982. It was the first CAD program written entirely in assembly language, as opposed to a high-level language like C, FORTRAN, or COBOL. This allowed the program to be smaller and faster than previous CAD programs, which used languages that, in turn, often required extensive compiler options.
When the first AutoCAD came out in 1982, the graphics system used by the program was called DrawCo. It was based on an external graphics card and consisted of three layers of windows that overlapped each other. To draw, you would click on the first layer of windows, then move to the second layer, and so on. It required users to switch windows using the window menu.
The next release of AutoCAD, AutoCAD II, introduced the concept of a drawing window. Users still had to use layers, but you could access them in a single window, making the program much more intuitive and user-friendly.
With the introduction of the first version of AutoCAD, users could set up and save a drawing template. The templates consist of drawings stored on a hard drive and can contain many drawing layers. The first AutoCAD template contained seven drawing layers. AutoCAD II also introduced the concept of drawing views. In these views, you could

The.NET language extension is similar to Visual Basic for Applications. An AutoLISP or Visual LISP developer can use either one to create an AutoCAD add-on or program. AutoLISP and VBA were in turn derived from ObjectARX.
As AutoCAD has always been a vector-based application, the company wanted to continue to support this heritage. ObjectARX supports:
Vector Graphics (SVG, VRML)
Vector Objects (paths, splines, curves, polygons, objects, as well as the AutoLISP Vector object.)
AutoCAD DXF 2D vector graphics export
As well as:
Generate true (bitmap) 2D graphics (with basic rendering features).
Easily define a database on the fly for your drawings.
Import all of your existing drawings into one project.
Import and export drawings to other popular formats (AutoCAD formats) and other CAD/CAM packages (such as Cadsoft, Windchill, etc.)
AutoCAD is based on an object-oriented programming approach. The ObjectARX programming environment is an object-oriented programming language, similar to Visual Basic.
AutoCAD ObjectARX programming is an extension to Microsoft.NET Framework. This means AutoCAD ObjectARX is designed to work with the Microsoft.NET Framework. In the.NET Framework, this is what all.NET software must run on. In AutoCAD, the designer and developer must use.NET to program the application. ObjectARX is available for both AutoCAD LT and AutoCAD. ObjectARX is built upon the same technology as ObjectARX DesignStudio, the AutoCAD ObjectARX Design and Development Environment.
Programming with Visual Studio
Visual Studio is a component of the Microsoft Visual Studio family. It is a general-purpose integrated development environment (IDE) for software development. Visual Studio has become the primary Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for creating new applications, and many products are created as add-ins for Visual Studio. Microsoft has offered a wide variety of options to customize Visual Studio for a specific purpose.
Visual Studio is the primary development environment for AutoCAD in addition to the free (as in beer) AutoCAD 2010 and the commercial AutoCAD LT. Visual Studio will not import the older AutoCAD format files created in version 2004 and earlier.

Use the on-screen and printable forms within the Markup Assist panel to send annotations, edit comments, and add notes and dimensions to drawings.
Check that the information has been correctly imported into your drawing by comparing the imported markups with the original drawing.
In the markups panel, select which component to review by clicking on the arrow to the left of the desired component to toggle between reviewing top-level objects, layers, comments, notes, and dimensions. (video: 1:07 min.)

Apply Early Filters
Using filters while creating drawings is a time-saver and helps keep your work organized. When creating a new drawing, the Filters section of the New Drawing dialog box displays your default filters, which are automatically applied to every new drawing. You can also select additional filters from the Filters dialog box.
Select Multiple Objects or Layers
Select multiple objects or layers with the shift key. You can continue to select objects or layers after you release the shift key. Select objects or layers in the order in which you want to view them.
Move with the Arrow Keys
Press the left and right arrow keys to move an object left and right, respectively. Press the up and down arrow keys to move an object up or down. Use the previous and next arrow keys to move through a group of objects. Press and hold the left and right arrow keys while moving a group of objects up and down to move the group up and down. You can also use the the previous and next arrow keys to scroll through text, equations, or named instances on a drawing page.
Moving objects is simple with the Object Snap feature. Press the left or right arrow keys to move an object left or right. Press the up or down arrow keys to move an object up or down. Hold down the left or right arrow keys while moving a group of objects up or down
