its no surprise that the wildly anticipated xcom reboot, xcom 2, is the most popular game on the ios app store. when it launched, with a bevy of eye-catching features and an emulated version of the original xcom game, reviewers and ios players enjoyed playing the game. as the game went on sale and players obtained it, the praise grew. apc+ reports that as of its most recent report, the game was the second best selling game on apple devices.
the game, though, is not without its flaws. regardless of which console youre using, youll need to spend money. this can be done by trading items, buying upgrades, or raising the research points of your soldiers. there is no manual save option, so once your current save file is destroyed, youll have to start over. every decision, including the destruction of enemy troops, has consequences, so your options do not always work in your favor. games based on the xcom universe have come a long way since the original, but the remake still has some kinks to work out.
quite simply, theres very little to do in the first few missions of the game and even fewer resources. if youre like me, youll find yourself losing interest relatively quickly. but there are some features that do add a bit of longevity. there are leaderboards, ranking for the top players in the world, and for your friends. there are challenges, which are rewards for completing missions.
if youre not sure what to do next, the game will give you a list of 20 choices. these range from going to the hospital to fighting a new enemy to saving a store. it starts out slow and gentle and then turns into an adrenaline-fueled rush of action-packed combat. each mission has a difficulty that can be unlocked, and by offering new ranks, its easy to match a player’s specific skill level.
not every officer can be assigned one of the skills required to use the avenger class, but if you bump up the level of the new xcom commander to five, the avenger will be able to equip one of the higher ranked officers in addition to their other regular weapons.
starting the game up again automatically reopens every mission you previously completed. this is just a quality of life addition to xcom 2, and also helps to limit any excessive traveling that may have taken place before reaching the starting area. it’s perfect for new players.
in previous xcom titles, a brief message saying that “someone’s been caught”, or similar, would appear in the main menu if one of your soldiers got captured in battle. this has been removed from xcom 2, but you can use the “report” button to do it manually. you can also issue various other alerts such as “soldier is running away”, “there’s an enemy on the other side of the map” or “your shield generator is currently out of ammo”.
long-lasting groupings of enemies (up to a maximum of 25) can now be targeted during combat. while the number of groups can be changed under the “battle sequence” settings, the maximum size is hardcoded.
one of the best ways to pull off some great gameplay tricks is to adjust game mechanics. xcom: enemy within has you building up technologies in five different area, and early-game moves can have a big effect on what you build next. the best example of this is the pre-req for your first drone, the drone bay, which you will need to upgrade to a full drone bay before purchasing more advanced drones. much of xcom: enemy within’s tech tree is sort of bent toward preventing you from reaching a level of tech where you can build a super-advanced drone in the first place.
